2014 DRAFT PICK SIGNING and speculation thread

Interesting that the Braves took another SS from a small college in Oklahoma in the 19th round. Hope he's half as good as the last one 8^).

Chad, what is your take on Salazar

Needs to harness the off speed. Looks to be a long time away from the show but that's OK with guys like Sims and Hursh ahead of him and possibly the two guys who we grabbed 3rd and 4th rounds this year. I know he's working on his slider and improving his change. The one thing he has going is he's easy 92-95 and that always plays well in the bullpen if he can develop the slider and have an average change. Too early still though to tell what he will be if anything.

Another article about Dazon Cole.

Hard not to root for this kid.

The Braves have asked Cole to play on a summer-travel team so that their scouting director can see him before they make an offer. “I will have to go out there,” he said, “and show them what I have.”

Great article. Shows how a ton of talented kids fall by the wayside in the current "travel team" system. Takes a good chunk of dough to pretty much play any high school sport at the elite level these days.

Not only that, but young players like this may also not be able to attend college either. Baseball only gets 11.7 scholarships to divy up among 27 players. Most of the time, they need academic scholarships to supplement the difference in tuition. Because of that, a lot of young players end up going ahead and making the jump to pro ball, probably before they have developed their skills to the point where they can succeed.

This is from the Peru State (NE) website regarding 40th round pick Randy Santiesteban. It says he plans on signing.

PS--Rico, looking at the draft list, I can't imagine how difficult it's going to be to pitch to Dykstra. At 5-1, he's gotta have a pretty small strike zone.

Looks like he is going to play hard ball for his offer : "They (the Braves' organization) should be contacting me in the next couple of days with an offer and I am going to take it."

Saw that on Dykstra as well. You beat me to it! I like the pick of Dykstra though in all seriousness.

I did kind of chuckle when I read his comment. "Son, the Braves have offered you a bus ticket and will be putting you up at a youth hostel. Sound good to you?"

I like the Dykstra pick. Read a synopsis that says he may end up in the OF, but kid sounds like he likes to play.

Is his old man out of jail yet?

Baseball America confirms picks 3-6 signing, 4-6 at slot, No.3 well below(!)

Jackson Clairon-Ledger and Hattiesburg American reporting that No. 8 Bradley Roney, RHP from Southern Miss, signed Sunday with Braves and will be joining Danville roster. Roney had 30 saves in his career, 12 this past season!

FYI, Mac Marshall has officially blown off the Astros in favor of LSU. Expect the same for Braves' No. 21 Jake Godfrey, who has not waivered from his commitment.

Chris Cotillo says Sobotka signs for $400 K, but we'll let others keep track of the $$$.

Diaz could be the sleeper of our first 10 picks. Especially so if the Braves can find a bump or two in velocity. He should be a fast mover in the system being a more advanced lefty who knows how to pitch. Worst case you move him to the pen.

We knew somebody had to go well below slot once we learned Fulencheck went well over. I've seen Povse throw. I think he may ultimately end up in the pen as a set up type guy who can just air it out. Still, if you get a good bullpen arm you can use for several years out of a 3rd round pick you signed well below slot, that's not a bad thing.

I think he'll move fast. Only question is his ceiling. He may be another Gilmartin, but at least we waited until the 5th round to draft him.
