This is an absolute damn disgrace. The Braves if they were as classy as they think they are, would honor the deal and pay the penalty.
Here is article from Columbus (Ga.) paper:
Josh Anthony won’t be signing with the Atlanta Braves, after all.
The Braves called the former Hardaway High star Friday morning to rescind the offer they made — and that Anthony had accepted — on Thursday. Now, Anthony will enroll at Auburn and will begin playing on the Tigers’ baseball team in the fall.
“That is a perfect way to describe it,” Anthony said when asked if he felt like he had been on a roller-coaster the past few days.
Anthony was drafted on June 11 out of Western Oklahoma State in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball draft. Anthony was taken with the 469th overall pick. He announced Wednesday that he had turned down the Braves and would play at Auburn. But then the Braves called on Thursday and sweetened their offer to include a $250,000 bonus and money for Anthony’s educational expenses. Anthony accepted the offer, and he was told he would start with the Braves’ Advance Rookie team in Danville, Va.
But then the Braves’ scouting director, Brian Bridges, called Anthony’s father, Eric, at 10:30 Friday morning to tell him they would not be able to honor the deal. Eric Anthony said he told Bridges he needed to call Josh and Josh’s mom and tell them the news.
“I am not upset. I am not angry,” Anthony said. “It was a win-win situation for me no matter what happened, if I went to Auburn or signed with the Braves. “I look at it as being God’s way of telling me what route I should be taking.”
Anthony said if the Braves draft him again in the future, he would be OK with that.
“I will be OK with any team drafting me,” he said. “That will be an opportunity.”
Eric Anthony said the Braves told him that the increase in Josh’s offer came about when the Braves wanted to pull an offer to another player. Anthony said that Major League Baseball told the Braves they had to honor that contract. An email request for a comment from the Braves was not answered Friday night.
Anthony spent the past two seasons at Western Oklahoma State, where he earned National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-America honors.
Anthony batted .444 with 25 homers and 84 RBIs in 65 games. He stole 49 bases and scored 112 runs. In 2015, he batted .425 with 20 homers and 71 RBIs. He helped lead Western Oklahoma to the NJCAA World Series.
